Plot summary

The movie opens with a woman Vasudha (Vidya Balan) stepping off a bus. An elderly man, Hari (Rajkummar Rao), sees a psychiatrist about hallucinations of his wife. His daughter-in-law takes him to his wife's funeral. There, he steals her ashes and leaves a diary for his son.

The story jumps to the past, where Vasudha is a single mother whose husband has been missing for five years. Bound to tradition, she has been waiting for him since he left her. Vasudha meets Aarav Ruparel (Emraan Hashmi) in one of his hotels, where she works as a floral arranger. Vasudha comes to save him in a mock fire drill, and he offers her a job in his hotel in Dubai, which she refuses at first.

However, she later gets to know from police that her husband Hari murdered five American journalists and is a member of a terrorist group. She decides to take up Aarav's offer and leaves with her son.

In Dubai, Aarav and Vasudha grow closer and he falls in love with her. He tells her his story of being an illegitimate child of a bar dancer, who was his inspiration. He also reveals that he has a terminal illness and wants to live his life to the fullest. He proposes to Vasudha, but she rejects him, feeling guilty for betraying her husband.

Meanwhile, Hari escapes from prison and contacts Vasudha. He tells her that he is innocent and was framed by his boss, who is the leader of the terrorist group. He asks her to come back to him and prove his innocence. Vasudha is torn between her past and present, and decides to go back to India with Hari.

Aarav follows them and tries to convince Vasudha to stay with him. He also helps Hari find his boss and expose his crimes. However, Hari is killed by a bomb planted by his boss in his car. Vasudha is devastated and blames Aarav for her husband's death. She breaks all ties with him and leaves.

The story returns to the present, where Aarav is reading Hari's diary.
